8 Weeks Pregnant What’s Happening Inside and What to Expect

At 8 weeks pregnant, you’re still early in your journey, but both you and your baby are going through major changes. By now, you may have adjusted to the idea of being pregnant, and you’re likely feeling the first wave of pregnancy symptoms. Here’s a look at what’s happening inside your body, how your baby is developing, and what you can expect during this stage.

Your Baby’s Development at 8 Weeks

At 8 weeks, your baby is growing rapidly and is about the size of a raspberry. Though still small, many important developments are happening:
  • Major organs like the heart, brain, and lungs are forming, and the heart is beating at a steady rhythm.
  • Facial features such as the nose, lips, and eyelids are starting to take shape. The eyes are covered with thin eyelids that won’t open until later in pregnancy.
  • Tiny arms and legs are growing, and fingers and toes are beginning to emerge from what were once small paddles.
  • Movement begins: While you won’t feel it yet, your baby is starting to make small movements inside the amniotic sac.

What You Might Be Feeling

Around 8 weeks, the pregnancy symptoms that started in earlier weeks may intensify. Here’s what you might be experiencing:

1. Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting are common around this time, and despite the name, it can happen at any time of day. If you’re feeling queasy, try eating small, frequent meals and sticking to bland foods like crackers or toast.

2. Fatigue

Your body is working hard to support your growing baby, and it’s normal to feel more tired than usual. Make sure to rest when you can, and don’t hesitate to take naps if you need them.

3. Breast Tenderness

Breast changes are common in early pregnancy, and you may notice swelling, tenderness, or darkening of the areolas as your body prepares for breastfeeding.

4. Frequent Urination

As your uterus grows, it starts putting pressure on your bladder, which can lead to more frequent trips to the bathroom. This is a normal part of pregnancy, but try to stay hydrated and avoid cutting back on fluids.

5. Mood Swings

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause emotional ups and downs. If you find yourself feeling extra sensitive or moody, know that this is a common experience and perfectly normal.

Your Body at 8 Weeks

By 8 weeks, you may not be visibly showing yet, but your body is undergoing significant changes:
  • Uterus expansion: Your uterus is growing to accommodate your baby and is now about the size of a lemon.
  • Weight gain: While some women start to gain weight by week 8, others might lose a bit of weight due to nausea and morning sickness. Both are normal, but make sure you’re nourishing yourself and your baby as much as possible.

What to Do at 8 Weeks

Here are some important steps to take at this stage of pregnancy:

1. Schedule Your First Prenatal Visit

If you haven’t already, now is the time to schedule your first prenatal appointment. Your doctor will confirm your pregnancy, estimate your due date, and may perform an ultrasound. You’ll also go over your medical history and discuss any concerns you might have.

2. Start Prenatal Vitamins

It’s essential to be taking prenatal vitamins, especially ones with folic acid, which helps prevent neural tube defects. If you haven’t started them yet, talk to your doctor about which one is right for you.

3. Hydrate and Eat Well

Even if morning sickness makes it hard, try to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet. Small, frequent meals that include lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains can help keep you energized and ease nausea.

4. Prepare for Emotional Shifts

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at this stage. Talking with your partner or a trusted friend about your emotions can help. If you're feeling particularly anxious, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor.

When to Call Your Doctor

While most symptoms are normal, there are some signs to watch for that should prompt a call to your healthcare provider:
  • Severe nausea or vomiting (unable to keep anything down)
  • Heavy bleeding or severe cramping
  • Fever or chills
  • Dizziness or fainting spells

The 8th week of pregnancy is a time of rapid growth and development for your baby. While you might be dealing with some less-than-pleasant symptoms like nausea and fatigue, these early signs of pregnancy are a good indication that your body is doing exactly what it should. Take care of yourself, get plenty of rest, and soon enough, you’ll be in the second trimester with new milestones to look forward to!
