27 Weeks Pregnant: Entering the Third Trimester

27 Weeks Pregnant Entering the Third Trimester

Welcome to the 27th week of pregnancy—a major milestone as you prepare to step into your third trimester! This is a time of rapid growth for your baby and noticeable changes in your body. Here’s what to expect this week as you and your baby continue to grow together.

Your Baby at 27 Weeks

Your baby is busy getting ready for life outside the womb:
  • Size and Weight: Your baby is now about the size of a head of lettuce, weighing roughly 2 pounds and measuring around 14.4 inches.
  • Brain Development: The brain is becoming more active, and the surface is starting to develop grooves and folds, essential for higher brain functions.
  • Hearing: Your baby can hear more clearly now and may even respond to familiar voices with kicks or movements.
  • Lung Maturity: Lungs are still developing but are producing surfactant, a substance needed for breathing after birth.
  • Sleep Patterns: Your baby has periods of sleep and wakefulness, often not aligned with your own schedule.

Your Body at 27 Weeks

As you move into your third trimester, you may notice some new symptoms and changes.

Physical Changes

  • Growing Belly: Your uterus has grown significantly and is now about 2 inches above your belly button.
  • Weight Gain: Many women have gained between 15–25 pounds by this stage.
  • Braxton Hicks Contractions: These practice contractions might feel more frequent but should remain irregular and painless.

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of Breath: Your growing baby pushes against your diaphragm, making breathing slightly harder.
  • Back Pain: The extra weight can strain your back and lead to discomfort.
  • Swelling: Mild swelling in your hands, feet, and ankles is common due to fluid retention.
  • Heartburn: Hormonal changes and your growing uterus pressing on your stomach can cause acid reflux.
  • Fatigue: Energy levels may dip as your body works harder to support your baby’s development.

Tips for a Healthy 27th Week

  1. Stay Active:
    • Light exercises like walking or prenatal yoga can relieve aches, improve circulation, and boost energy.
  2. Hydrate and Eat Well:
    • Focus on foods rich in iron, calcium, and protein to support your baby’s growth and prevent anemia.
  3. Sleep Smart:
    • Sleep on your side (preferably the left) with a pregnancy pillow to improve circulation and reduce back pain.
  4. Prepare for the Glucose Test:
    • Your healthcare provider may schedule a glucose screening this week to check for gestational diabetes.
  5. Track Baby’s Movements:
    • Start noticing your baby’s movement patterns. Any significant changes should be reported to your doctor.

When to Call Your Doctor

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:
  • Severe swelling in your face or hands (possible sign of preeclampsia).
  • Painful or regular contractions.
  • Decreased fetal movements.
  • Sudden or severe headaches, vision changes, or dizziness.

Looking Ahead

With only 13 weeks to go, you’re getting closer to meeting your baby! Take this time to plan for the third trimester, including scheduling prenatal classes, packing your hospital bag, and finalizing your birth plan. Enjoy this phase of pregnancy—it’s a magical time full of anticipation and preparation.
